Getting to know Shaina

I graduated from Loma Linda University in California with my doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology (PhD). I have been practicing DBT for 10 years with people of varying backgrounds and needs. I love DBT because it helps people learn how to take control of their emotions and their mental health through learning new skills and applying them in the real world. I enjoy working with individuals who are going through very challenging and difficult times in their lives.

Not only do I aim to help people get through the hardest parts of life, I also aim to educate and guide family members as they support their loved ones through challenges. My interests and experiences are in treating serious mental illness, therefore, I have extensive experience in treating individuals at their most acute stages of mental health crisis; specifically: suicidality, non-suicidal self-injurious behavior, severe depression, severe anxiety, episodes of mania, and psychosis. Many of my clients have told me that I am mothering and nurturing as a therapist. I approach therapy from a caring and compassionate perspective, more so after I became a mother of three children.

I use DBT and CBT techniques to approach each case with this care and compassion. In fact, one of the fundamental beliefs of DBT is that people are doing the best that they can with what they have and what they know in the present moment.

The dialectic to this belief is that people can also learn more and be taught the skills to gain access to their needs and become more effective. My “nurturing” approach to therapy is based on this belief that I have for every one of my clients.
